Who can use Raynesway HWRC?

Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) is for Derby and Derbyshire residents using a private vehicle to dispose of household recycling and waste, up to 12 times a year. 

Raynesway HWRC is not for traders or businesses to dispose of waste. You also cannot use Raynesway HWRC to dispose of waste generated by a trader or business doing work at your home (for example, left over materials).

All visits to Raynesway must be pre-booked (unless you visit on a Sunday when you do not need a booking). To make a booking please view the booking a visit to Raynesway HWRC page.

Can I bring my van or trailer?

Vans and pick-up trucks must be under 3.5 tonnes and we only accept domestic type trailers which are less than 2m long. Larger vehicles or trailers are not permitted on site.

Can I come by bike?

Yes, customers can deliver waste and recycling by bike or cargo bike. Please take appropriate safety measures such as cycle helmets and lights.

You do not need to pre-book, but you should wait to access site in turn with other customer’s vehicles - please do not jump the queue if there is one.

Cycles must not be ridden on site, so please get off and push while at the HWRC.

Once you are at the HWRC, go directly to the meet and greet cabin. You will be directed to a designated area for cycle users where you can put items into a container and leave, without accessing the main site. Staff will move your recycling to the appropriate area later on.

Can I come on foot?

No - people cannot access the site on foot.

What can I take to Raynesway HWRC?

You can take most household waste and recycling to Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC). Check our Recycling Helper for a list of what you can and can’t take.

To make your trip quicker and easier, sort your waste before you go. For example, put cardboard together in one bag, plastics in another.

Recycling and waste should be deposited in the appropriate bay. Once waste has been deposited it becomes the responsibility of the operators. To maximise recycling, reuse, composting and recovery of waste, we don’t allow items to be taken away by other parties.

Staff are available to help, so please ask if you need it.

Please note:

Gas cylinders/fire extinguishers – we can accept:

• unbranded caravan or boat cylinders - if you have a cylinder with no markings to identify its legal owner you can bring a maximum of 2 into our HWRCs within a calendar year
• fire extinguishers specifically manufactured and sold for domestic household use, maximum size 2kg, a maximum of 2 extinguishers within a calendar year
• camping gas stove cylinders - we'll accept a maximum of 4 of these cylinders, if possible please attach the cylinder to the stove and burn off any residual contents before bringing it to us for disposal
• party balloon inflation cylinders - we'll accept household quantities of these cylinders

What can't I take to Raynesway HWRC?

Most recycling and waste can be taken to Raynesway HWRC but there are a few items that we can’t accept:

• scrap vehicles or parts, including trailers
• waste from building demolition, extensions or construction, including wooden garden structures like sheds, playhouses, fencing or decking.

Commercial waste

Raynesway HWRC is not permitted to accept trade or business waste. You must make arrangements with a suitably licensed waste contractor, either to collect your waste, or for you to deliver your waste to, depending on the type and quantity you produce.

Whoever you chose and whatever service you opt for, please ensure you check the legitimacy of any provider to ensure your waste is dealt with responsibly. To do this check the Environment Agency website. Should your waste fall into the wrong hands and get fly tipped, you could be held responsible for any penalties or prosecution.

Please note:

Gas cylinders/fire extinguishers – we do not accept:

• branded caravan or boat gas cylinders (Calor Gas for example) - visit Liquid Gas for disposal information
• cylinders containing commercial type gases such as those used for welding
• medical gas cylinders such as those containing oxygen should be returned to the medical facility which issued them
• fire extinguishers - extinguishers which originated in a commercial business premise should be disposed through a private sector hazardous waste disposal contractor.

Is Raynesway HWRC my only option to get rid of waste?

Before booking a visit to Raynesway HWRC consider the following:

• Could your waste or items be reused or recycled?
• Could items be donated to charities for reuse or could they be sold on online marketplaces such as Gumtree or eBay etc?
• Could you see if an item could be repaired?

If you are buying large items such as fridges/freezers, ask your retailer if they offer a scheme to take back your old items when they deliver the new. Different places offer different services for a range of products from beds and mattresses, to carpets and electricals. Recycling old electricals is usually very easy – large retailers will often accept them back in store for recycling or will remove when they deliver your new items.

The council also provides a reasonably priced bulky waste collection service. Money from bookings goes back into local services for local people and items are properly disposed of.

Booking a visit to Raynesway HWRC

Visits to Raynesway HWRC Monday through to Saturday must be pre-booked. Without a booking you will be turned away. Bookings are not required if you visit on a Sunday, just turn up within opening hours. 

Booking a visit to Raynesway HWRC is only available to residents who live in Derby or Derbyshire. Anyone from outside the city or county, or from a commercial property or organisation, will not be able to book and visit.

Households are able to make up to 12 bookings a year (between January and December), via a free e-permit system for Raynesway Household Waste Recycling Centre. The reasons for these changes are outlined in the changes to Raynesway HWRC news article.

How to book a visit

Bookings can be made online. Please bring your booking confirmation to site in case staff need to see it. Book a visit to Raynesway HWRC

Alternatively, you can contact Derby Direct on 0333 200 6981 to make a booking over the phone. Commercial properties will not be able to book. Please do not call the site directly to try and make a booking.

Sunday visits

You do not need to book to visit Raynesway on a Sunday. You can simply turn up. However, please bear in mind that you may need to queue to get access.

• The busiest time to visit is between 10:30am and 4pm. We recommend that you visit before or after this to avoid long queues.
• Make your visit quicker by sorting your materials by type before you come. This makes them easier to deposit and helps to reduce queues.
• Please check this page to find out what we can and can’t accept, including any limits, before you visit to avoid delays.
• If you need help, please ask.
• If you want to avoid the queues, book to visit the HWRC from Monday to Saturday. Same day visits are normally available, and you can be in and out within minutes.

Booking FAQs

Can I book at the gate?

No. This would cause delays for others who have made a booking.

What if I don’t book and just turn up?

Unless it's a Sunday, you will be turned away at the gate and asked to return when you have made a booking. This could cause delays for others who have made their booking.

Can I book to visit the same day?

Yes, providing there is availability. Please bring a copy of your booking with you when you visit in case site staff need to check this.

Can I book more than one visit per day?

Yes, you can. However, any visits you book will be deducted from your annual allocation.

What happens if I use a different car to the one on the booking?

You will not be granted access to use the site. Please ensure the booking you make is for the vehicle you will use on the day.

Can I cancel my visit?

You can only cancel your booking in advance. You will need to visit the Raynesway HWRC bookings site and log in with your details. You can then cancel your visit by selecting ‘Manage Digital Permits’ on the side menu and selecting the appropriate booking. A cancel button will be visible at the bottom of the permit. Once cancelled, your allocation will be credited to your account.

If you’re unable to make your booking, please cancel it so it can be offered to another resident.

I didn’t use all my visits by December. Can I roll them over to next year?

No, this isn’t possible. Your allocation will automatically reset to 12 on 1 January.

What if I move to a new house?

If you move within Derby and Derbyshire, the next time you login you simply need to update your address. The system will collate the visits you had at your old house with those you use at your new house. When you reach 12 visits, the system will not allow you make any further bookings. Your allocation of 12 visits will refresh on 1 January.

If the previous occupants used permits at the address but do not update their account, their bookings may also count towards the 12 at the property. If you reach 12 before you expect to, please contact us so we can update any accounts at the property which are no longer valid.

Should I turn up early?

You can turn up a few minutes before your time slot but please don’t turn up too early (more than 30 minutes) as this will increase queues. Please do not arrive before the site has opened each day – you could prevent us from emptying other residents bins.

What happens if delays mean I’m late for my slot?

If delays caused by queues mean you arrive later than your booked slot (up to an hour), you will still be allowed to enter the site.

Will there be queues?

If everyone uses the booking system, queues should be minimal. If people arrive without a booking, it will cause delays and queues for others. We will do our best to keep waiting times down but please be patient and understand that we’re trying to keep you and others safe.

Staying safe at Raynesway HWRC

Raynesway is a working site so please wear appropriate footwear and follow any signage to help keep you, other visitors and staff safe.

Before you visit Raynesway HWRC:

• Monday to Saturday you will need to book a time slot to visit the site – if you try to visit the site without a booking, you will not be given access and you will cause delays for others
• Consider making use of other options such as the bulky waste service, a licensed waste carrier, hiring a skip or the free garden waste service
• Consider reuse and recycle options such as Facebook Marketplace, Freecycle, Gumtree etc.

You must not visit the site if you or anyone in your household has COVID-19 symptoms. You must follow Government guidance on self-isolation and testing. You can cancel or change your visit on the Raynesway HWRC booking site. 

When visiting Raynesway HWRC:

• Do not move cones or barriers to get to skips
• Please do not bring children or pets to the site. If children or pets exit vehicles, we will have to close the site to everyone and it will cause delays for others.
• Where possible, only one adult from each household should visit the site, unless you are bringing a large item such as a fridge freezer or sofa
• Staff on-site are available to assist those who  genuinely need it, or if you ask
• You must wear gloves and appropriate footwear, when unloading waste from your vehicle and taking it to the skips
• Make efforts to maintain distance between yourself and people you wouldn't normally come into contact with
• Only bring items we can accept at the site. You can check our Recycling Helper.
• Please do not bring excessive quantities of waste or items. This could cause delays for other people wishing to visit and our staff are not able to help as they normally would

There are no hand washing facilities on site for visitors. Please wash your hands as soon as you get home.

Limits on DIY waste

You can dispose of limited amounts of home DIY waste at Raynesway. This includes:

• up to 50kg of concrete, cement, mortar, rubble, soil and turf (for example, two 25kg sacks) in a single visit.

and/or one of the following:

• a bathroom suite: one bath, one sink, one toilet and one bidet only, one shower screen/cubicle
• one or two window frames and doors (with or without glass)
• small amounts of plasterboard or plasterboard products, not whole sheets
• small amounts of wood from minor, domestic DIY projects or repairs (that is a maximum of 2 damaged fence panels)

Visitors who reach these maximum amounts must wait one week before making return visits.

Residents making excessive numbers of trips with large volumes of waste may be turned away from the site.

If you are planning major refurbishment work to your house or garden, or carrying out a house clearance we recommend you hire a skip as part of the project. Alternatively, a commercial bulky waste collection may be suitable. If using a private waste removal service (man with a van) please ensure they are licensed to carry waste. If your waste ends up fly-tipped, you could be liable for prosecution.

Asbestos and chemicals

Residents visiting to deposit volumes of waste unlikely to have been generated by a private household or making excessive numbers of trips with large volumes of waste, may be turned away from the site. Please contact the Raynesway site either in person or by calling 01332 755482 before you visit to make sure they can accept your material. Please note that the phone is not always manned.

As a guide, we will accept:

• small quantities (a maximum of five litres or five kilograms) of hazardous waste, such as pesticides, oils (including cooking oil), mercury and petrol
• A maximum of 10l of engine oil
• small quantities of asbestos waste from minor repair works to roofs and guttering
• a maximum of three sheets or panels of asbestos, measuring six foot by three foot (1.83m x 0.91m).

Important:

• dampen the asbestos before lifting or moving it to help prevent the release of asbestos cement fibres
• do not break up or cut the asbestos to fit in plastic bags. Instead double-wrap sheets/panels in plastic sheeting or bags
• we won’t allow you to make a return visit
• you must dispose of larger quantities by private registered asbestos removal contractors.

Purchasing bagged compost

Bagged compost produced from material collected from garden bins and at HWRCs is available to purchase at site.

The cost is £4 for 60 litres (three 20 litre bags). Card payments are preferred. If you are unable to pay by card, you will need to bring the correct money as there is no change held at Raynesway HWRC.
